Manu Day 4: Pantiacolla to Yima Lodge

The day began before dawn with the howler monkeys telling everyone in the rainforest where they were; still in the tree on the edge of the lawn.  There was something special about waking up in the middle of the Amazon rainforest to the sound of howler monkeys.  Though Ben and I did decide that they sounded a little like the bath water running down the drain when you pull out the plug.

We walked for an hour before breakfast, spotted a few birds, including a rufus headed woodpecker, but he was too quick for a photo.  Then we waited for our pickup by the next group while Miguel and the Germans headed back up the river to finish their 5 day tour.

On and off rain so nothing to do but relax a bit
Eventually our new group, consisting of 8 Mexicans and 2 Americans arrived and we loaded our gear in the canoe and set off again.  By this time it was raining in earnest and it wasn't the most fun canoe ride.  The rain blew straight under the canopy as we huddled under a tarp.  I slept for quite a while.

Finally the rain eased up and the wildlife started coming out; flocks of eastern king birds, herons, an osprey with a fish

The canoe pulled up to Yima Lodge just as darkness was falling.  After a much more lively dinner with the Mexicans and Tab and Marcey (the Americans) it was spider spotting time:

Tarantula hiding in a bamboo fence

Golden orb spider - very poisonous
