Manu Day 7: Down Manu River

Another early start; up at 4:30am to be on the river by 5:45!  This was the best chance to see the elusive jaguar, but sadly none were to be seen.   The consolation prize was a beautiful sunrise over the Amazon rainforest.  There was a peccary on a beach and plenty of birds.

We stopped at Boca Manu again for some expensive cold drinks and crackers, plus an insight into how they make the big canoes that ply the river.

The lunch stop was at Ribi's lodge, just as the sun started to go behind clouds and thunder started to rumble.  There was an enormous spreading fig tree, rather like a mangrove with it's extensive root system.  During lunch the lightening, thunder and rain began in earnest and continued for an hour - a truly impressive display.

Fortunately it eased up by the time we headed back to the canoe for another 3 hours down river to the next lodge.  Along the way we saw three groups of capybaras.

Our trusty canoe

Blanquillo Lodge was a lovely surprise - very comfortable with hot showers!  Even though the temperatures were still very high it was wonderful to have the option of solar heated water.

Twilight on the river, oropendula nests in the tree

The night walk after dinner turned up more interesting creatures.

Small tree frog

Seriously large tarantula

No-one wanted to put a hand in the shot to give some kind of scale . . .

Super camouflaged horned frog

Tiny lizard
